Hi Richard, I would love to walk with your group. I am available on both Tuesday and Wednesday and the other easy question is how much. For my two hour tour, I charge $20 per person and for a half day (4 to 5 hours) $50 per person.
I believe the area which is richest in both biodiversity and history is the area between, Judith's Hill, Judith's Fancy and Salt River National Park. A comprehensive walk in this area takes about 4 to 5 hours and includes a discussion of a few hundred plants brought here by the Amerindians, the Europeans, the Africans and Americans for their medicinal, spiritual, recreational, nutritional, economic and aesthetic values. This is also the area which is rich in the history of Pirates, Dutch, Spanish, Jewish (both as slaves and salve owners), Africans (both as slaves and salve owners), English, Knights of Malta and Danish history as all influenced the development of this area. There are other places that are harder to walk and perhaps a little more pristine but none is more conducive to a discussion of the complex history of St. Croix nor with greater biodiversity. I look forward to the challenge of educating and entertaining your group. Give me a call at 340-277-3737 to discuss your options.

Hi Mark, the Closing time is theoretically April 1, to September 1 but there is a great deal of flexibility and the first leatherback has already returned. They open during the week for cruise ships but only when there are no turtles around. The best way to see it during turtle nesting season is to walk on a scheduled hike with The hiking association or volunteer for a turtle watch with SEA or the Hiking Club. These are closely monitored events so as to not violate the law. Ranger Mike Evans is a reasonable guy so you should contact him before doing anything on your own.
As to walking the beach, be very careful because the law is all on his side when it comes to "threatening or harming" an endangered species. Things like helping a turtle going the wrong way, disrupting a laying turtle, walking above the water line could or even taking a flash picture of a turtle can all be perceived to violate the law. So if you decide to walk the beach on your own and meet a ranger above all be humble, don't argue and listen to everything they say. Act stupid and apologize for everything. Realistically, from April 1 to September 30th, it is too darn hot to enjoy that beach as there is no shade or refreshments. Do not under any circumstances walk above the water line or spike an umbrella into the sand as they might take these as serious threats to turtles.

By way of introduction, Beth and I had a home here for five years, ending in 2002. We have been back a couple of times and this year we are renting a house on the far East End. We enjoy St. Croix a lot, but know an embarrassing small amount of history and natural history of the island (we’re generally very keen on these subjects wherever we are).
Next week, we have two friends visiting us from Louisville, Kentucky. We’re all around 65, and in reasonably good shape.
Are you available next Tuesday or Wednesday? If you are, could you suggest an outing that is about a half day long? Although there are some good places on the East End, I’d like to take them somewhere on the West End that offers a little more biodiversity.
Thank you and let me know.
Richard
P.S. By the way, can you let me know what you charge for this kind of outing?

I heard the park is closed during the week. I also heard that it opens up if a cruise ship is in port. Is this true? Also, if the park is closed, what prevents me from walking along the beach to gain access? Thank you so much for your help.

Hi Melissa, This season has been slow for hiking so all trips are on demand at the same prices.I love to walk the goat hill area and don't have enough strong hikers to do it often enough. Because I love the area, I have no minimum group size. Easiest way to contact me is by phone or text 340-277-3737. I always call back. Almost every day is good for me especially Friday or Saturday.
